Confucius Institute Celebrates 1st Year

    The Chinese Theater Works group has performed at several Confucius Institute events.

On May 19, 2010 the Confucius Institute at Pace University will celebrates its one year anniversary while hosting representatives from its sponsor and partner organizations Phoenix Publishing and Media Group (PPMG) and Nanjing Normal University.

Since its inauguration in May 2009, the Confucius Institute at Pace University has participated in many regional, national and international conferences and events including:

  • In September, the New York Chinese Opera Association presented a series of Beijing Opera shows.
  • Also in September, a Cultural Festival of Classical Chinese Theater Arts, cosponsored by Chinese Theatre Works. The 16th Century Kun Chinese Opera presented traditional Chinese arts and culture to the faculty and students at Pace.
  • A consortium on “China in the Future and the Mutual Responsibility” was held on campus in December 2009. Professor Michael Santoro from Rutgers University gave the keynote address. In addition to the faculty and students from Pace, delegates from the Chinese communities in New York City and commercial agencies in Wall Street attended. Pace University Professor Joseph Lee, PhD, an East Asian Studies scholar, participated in the panel discussion.
  • In order to strengthen its partnership with other Confucius Institutes, the Confucius Institute at Pace University participated in two regional Confucius Institute conferences in February 2010.
  • In April, The Confucius Institute at Pace University hosted the finals for the “Chinese Bridge,” the Greater New York Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students sponsored by Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Education in China, and organized by New York Service Center for Chinese Study Fellows, Inc., and Sino Television, Inc. It was the first overseas-based finals for the Chinese Bridge competition hosted by Hanban.
  • In April, the New York Chinese Opera Society established an endowed fund for an annual essay competition on the study of Chinese culture and history at Pace University. Three awards will be provided per year to the three best essays submitted by Pace undergraduate and graduate students on any aspect of Chinese culture and history.
  • On May 15, The Confucius Institute at Pace University will host the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York Annual Conference and the 8th New York International Conference on the Teaching of Chinese.
  • On May 19, The Confucius Institute at Pace University will celebrate its first anniversary with events including a screening of the film, “Confucius,” featuring the life of Confucius in ancient China, followed by a panel discussion. This event is open to the public, 2 to 5 p.m. in the Student Union of One Pace Plaza.
