Graduate Academic Dismissal

Usually, before being dismissed from an academic program in the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences (the “Program”), a student will have been on academic probation for one semester (the “Probationary Semester”). As soon as practicable after the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters and the second summer session, the Dyson College Scholastic Standing Committee will review the status of each graduate student who was on academic probation to determine whether the student satisfied the conditions of academic probation during the Probationary Semester. Students who satisfied the conditions of academic probation within the time permitted will be restored to good academic standing. Students who did not satisfy the conditions of academic probation within the time permitted will be dismissed automatically from the Program.

A student who fails to satisfy the conditions of his or her academic probation will receive written notification from the Scholastic Standing Committee as soon as practicable that he or she has been dismissed from Dyson College. However, dismissal is automatic if a student fails to satisfy the conditions of academic probation within the time period permitted and therefore is not contingent upon receipt of written notification. It is the student's responsibility to verify his or her academic standing before each semester and to make inquiries of the appropriate Program chair or director (or his or her designee) if clarification is needed.

A student who qualifies for probation more than twice shall be dismissed automatically from the Program and ordinarily there shall be no right to an appeal.

No advisor to or representative of the student (including, without limitation, attorneys) is permitted to meet with the Scholastic Standing Committee or to otherwise participate in the business of the Scholastic Standing Committee.

The Scholastic Standing Committee consists of six members from which three shall be selected to decide which students shall, in accordance with this Academic Dismissal Policy, be dismissed from the Program: two Dyson College of Arts and Sciences faculty members from the New York City campus, two from the Pleasantville campus and one from the White Plains campus, and one Associate Dean of Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. No member of the Scholastic Standing Committee is permitted to be a concurrent member of the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Appeals Committee. A decision of the Scholastic Standing Committee requires a majority vote. A member of the Scholastic Standing Committee who was a participant in the circumstances that gave rise to the unsatisfactory academic performance that may result in the student being placed on academic probation or dismissed from the Program must recuse him or herself from the Scholastic Standing Committee for the sole purpose of the issues before the Committee concerning that student.

The Academic Dismissal Policy may be changed from time to time at the sole discretion of the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences and such changes may be with or without prior notice. The Academic Dismissal Policy is not intended as, and shall not be construed as, a contract.
