MS in Publishing Blog

Pace University Publishing students have the advantage of studying in the heart of the publishing industry. We provide our students with guidance through every step of their academic careers and offer numerous opportunities for students to gain professional experience through internships, graduate assistantships and scholarships.

The MS in Publishing Blog is a vital part of our graduate program and serves as an essential resource for current students, alumni and faculty. One of the main objectives is to provide currently enrolled students, prospective students and alumni with a forum for departmental news, job and internship opportunities as well as alumni and faculty profiles and interviews. The blog showcases the uniqueness of the program and also provide the opportunity to students to write and publish pieces related to the industry.

The blog is also home to a variety of posts that promote industry panels, events and organizations, internship and job postings, and interesting news articles thus enriching the graduate experience for both students and alumni. The blog has helped us to solidify key industry relationships by cross promoting events and news which in turn, has opened up even more opportunities for our students. The “Publishing Links” section highlights some of our most valued relationships and stellar resources for all who visit the blog.

We have had more than 20,000 views of our site, which is in large part due to the unique, practical, interesting and timely information we post here. Our most popular feature is our monthly “Alumni in the Spotlight” interview, which highlights some of our most successful graduates. Current students find them useful for networking purposes, and alumni use them to reconnect with their classmates and to showcase their own skills and accomplishments — a useful thing to have as one moves on an up in their own careers! We also regularly profile our faculty, staff, advisory board members and guest lecturers to give our readers a real sense of the extraordinary quality of our courses and program.

The MS in Publishing Lab

The MS in Publishing Lab is located in room 806 on the 8th floor of the French Building at 551 5th Avenue. The M.S. in Publishing Program’s state-of-the-art multimedia contains 30 computers and a number of iPads are available for student and faculty use. With the advancements of technology in the publishing industry, the lab was completely renovated during the Summer 2014. Renovations included computer upgrades to the newest Apple iMacs. These computers are equipped with Cloud technology including the most up-to-date Adobe Creative Suite software. The lab will also received an upgrade to the audio-visual technology as well as brand new work stations and furniture.

Numerous classes are taught in the lab but it is open to students during its regularly scheduled hours and is a wonderful environment for students to work and interact with other in the publishing progam.

In addition, there is a Student Resource Center, which has also been updated with 8 iMacs, in room 805 at the Midtown Center. This Center is available for students to work individually or in groups.

The lab is open Monday through Friday. Hours are assigned and posted each semester.

Student Appreciation Dinners

Student appreciation dinners held each year to honor both current students and alumni of the program. All currently enrolled students are invited to attend and these events provide students an opportunity to network with faculty, alumni and publishing professionals.

Industry Organizations and Collaborations

Industry organizations are an important part of the MS in Publishing program in that our association with them allows students exclusive access to industry events and conferences for educational and networking purposes. Each year our students have the opportunity to volunteer at or to attend the Book Expo (BEA) (when in New York), the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) Annual Meeting, the Folio Show, the Women’s National Book Association (WNBA) and other prestigious publishing events. In addition, our longstanding relationship with American Business Media (ABM) provides our student with unique scholarship and internship opportunities.

Eliot DeYoung Schein Lecture Series

Eliot DeYoung Schein served as president of Schein/Blattstein Advertising, as professor at Pace University and as president of the New York Direct Marketing Club. He won that club’s leadership award in 1988 and a Silver Apple award in 1992. Schein was also a Folio: magazine columnist for many years. He was instrumental in developing the Consumer Marketing (Magazine Circulation) Course and Specialized Publications Course. He was a keynote speaker at the Folio Magazine Show conferences for many years. He had tremendous dedication to the Pace student and the publishing program. In 1999 he established the Eliot DeYoung Schein Lecture Series to give Pace students the opportunity to meet publishing professionals in the book and magazine industries. Since that time we have had the opportunity to bring distinguished publishing executives to the Pace Midtown site to lecture and meet our students.

The following distinguished professionals have served as Eliot DeYoung Schein Lecturers:

    Amy Gross, Former editor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Magazine for eight years, as well as five years as the features editor at Vogue, editorial director of Elle, and editor-in-chief of Mirabella.
Bonnie Fuller   Bonnie Fuller, Currently working as the President and Editor-in-Chief of Originally from Toronto, Canada, Ms. Fuller successfully established herself by moving to New York City to become the Editor-in-chief of YM Magazine, where she grew circulation from 700,000 to 1.7 million. During her career, she has been the launch editor of American Marie Claire magazine, Editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, and Editor-in-chief of Glamour magazine. In 2002, Ms. Fuller joined US Weekly as Editor-in-chief, and in 2003 served as Executive Vice President and Chief Editorial Director of American Media Inc., where she was responsible for overseeing AMI’s weekly and monthly magazines including Star, Shape, Natural Health, Country Weekly, and Men’s Fitness.
    Joseph Hanson, Chairman of Professional Media Group LLC and founder of FOLIO magazine. His company, Hanson Publications, Inc., developed the FOLIO: Show, a successful trade show and conference for the magazine industry. He also launched the FOLIO: 400, which was a comprehensive review of the largest magazines in America. Mr. Hanson also created the Publishing Hall of Fame, which each year honored magazine publishing executives for making significant, career-long contributions to magazine and book publishing.
Neil De Young   Neil De Young, Executive Director of Digital Media for Hachette Book Group. His responsibilities at Hachette include digital business development and strategy, eBook development, and website product management.  Mr. De Young reviews and assesses new business opportunities for Hachette, including contract negotiations and profit and loss assessment.  Prior to his position at Hachette, Mr. De Young held various positions at Scholastic, Inc.
    Michael Cairns, Chief Operating Officer  for the Online Division of Publishing Technology. Mr. Cairns is responsible for the company’s IngentaConnect and pub2web content platforms which support over 250 book and journal publishers located around the world. He is currently a member of the BISG board of directors and a prior member of the Association of American Publishers board of directors.
Deirdre Bair   DEIRDRE BAIR, Critically acclaimed author of five biographies, including Simone de Beauvoir: A Biography (1991)and Anais Nin: A Biography (1996), both chosen by the New York Times as “Best Books of the Year.” Bair received the National Book Award for Samuel Beckett: A Biography (1990). Her last two books were Calling it Quits: Late-Life Divorce and Starting Over (2007) and the critically acclaimed Saul Steinberg: A Biography (2012), about the celebrated illustrator and cartoonist. Bair is a literary journalist and former professor of Comparative Literature, who writes and speaks frequently about travel, feminist issues, and cultural life. She is also a longtime member of the advisory board of the MS in Publishing program at Pace University.
    ROBERT EVANSON, Director of Forbes since 2005, and from 2003 to 2008 was an advisor to Apax Partners, Inc. and The Parthenon Group. From 1992 to 2003, Mr. Evanson worked at The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., leading up to President of McGraw-Hill Education. Before that, Mr. Evanson held various posts at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. including Chief Financial Officer and CEO of Sea World Theme Parks and was a partner at Arthur Andersen & Co. Mr. Evanson received a B.B.A. from St. John's University and an M.B.A. from New York Institute of Technology.
Susan Katz   Susan Katz, President of Harper Collins Children’s Books, gave the 2010 annual Eliot DeYoung Schein lecture on April 14, 2010 to an audience of publishing graduate students and publishing faculty at the Midtown Executive Club. Ms. Katz described the state of children’s book publishing today and the strong influence technology has on the business.

Ms. Katz began her career at Harper Row in 1987 as the Publisher of the College Division. In 1993 she became the Group Vice President of Education, managing the School and College Division of the Company. In 1996 she became President of the Children’s Book Division which is her current position.

The Eliot DeYoung Schein lecture honors Mr. Schein’s memory and recognizes his contributions to the Pace Publishing program.
